Global Grant 1642940 is a multiple-club Grant jointly partnered by six clubs in Sabah, namely, Rotary Club of Likas Bay, Rotary Club Kota Kinabalu, Rotary Club Tanjung Aru, Rotary Club Labuan, Rotary Club Sandakan North and Rotary Club Tawau to sponsor the intra ocular lenses for patients with cataract from poorer socio-economic strata of society in Sabah. It is estimated that 30,000 patients are waiting for surgery in Sabah that require such assistance. The Grant was achieved through corporate partnership by HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad that donated MYR 95,000 and International Rotary partners from District 3750 and 3752 in Taiwan that donated USD 13,000. The Rotary Clubs in Sabah together contributed USD 17,000. All these contributions were matched by The Rotary Foundation to obtain a total grant amount of USD 85,464.
Rotary clubs in Sabah are working together with the State Ophthalmological Services of the Ministry of Health to address the problem of blindness caused by cataract. Ministry of Health has its own program the “Klinik Katarak 1Malaysia” program.
Global Grant 1642940 was formally launched by District Governor Datuk Lee Chuen Wan on Monday Sep 11, 2017 at the Daycare Ward of Hospital Queen Elizabeth, Kota Kinabalu. Rotarians from the participating Clubs were present. Director of Hospital Queen Elizabeth Dr. Heric Corray, Head of State Ophthalmology Services Dr. Shuaibah Abdul Ghani and Head of Department of Ophthalmology, Hospital Queen Elizabeth Dr. Sheena Alexander and their staffs also graced the occasion. Also present were PDG Philip Chong, the person who initiated this project, PDG Amco of Rotary Club Taipie Southgate, Datuk Vincent Pung, the CEO of Sabah Credit Corporation, the organisation that donated the mobile cataract surgery equipment to QEH and AG Francis.
